Oblong Cross Laid and Tied Stitch

Posted by Merideth Henry on

Laid and tied stitches are a beautiful way to cover canvas while adding texture and interest. To create this oblong cross variation, begin by laying base threads in two adjacent rows, leaving one row of canvas threads skipped between each pair. Once the foundation is set, tie the rows together with 3x1 oblong crosses, worked directly over the laid threads.

This stitch can be worked either horizontally or vertically, making it adaptable to your design space. For added dimension, experiment with thread types: a flat thread works beautifully for the laid foundation, while a shimmer or metallic thread makes the oblong crosses pop.

**Great option for Large background areas, baskets or bags, borders, and architecture**
