This Bat Darning Stitch is a slightly large straight stitch. To create it, begin at the far edge of the wing and move across the pattern in straight stitches. End each bat by taking your thread behind the stitched area before moving on to the next, which helps prevent thread drag from showing through the canvas.
This stitch makes a striking background when repeated and offset in each new row, or it can serve as a charming accent when you scatter a few bats across your design. For added dimension, experiment with different threads — a flat, slightly variegated fiber gives a natural bat look, while a shimmer or metallic thread makes each stitch pop.
The Bat Darning Stitch was designed by Jane M. Wood. Shared with full credit to the original designer.
